Game Design (MA)

Short games produced during this module was:

For this module, we were tasked with creating a new game every two weeks that followed a one-word brief using Clickteam Fusion. During the module, I created several small games and prototypes. For example, a frog-themed bass guitar learning game, a pinball / air-hockey mix and a narrative-driven point-and-click game.

This module provided us with a lot of practice and feedback. Every class, we had to play each other's games in front of our peers without any instruction from the creator. This taught me a lot about communicating with the player and scope awareness.

About

For the narrative brief, I created the game "Notes", which is a point-and-click game, where you explore an abandoned house, gathering ripped-up notes to figure out the past.

For the first part of the game, various scraps of notes are littered amongst the rubble, and the player collects them. After this, the player has to organise the scraps into the original piece of paper. Once organised the player can flick through the notes to read the full story.

About

Another game I created focused on teaching players to differentiate threads on the same cord from a bass. I play the bass myself and therefore provided the sound for it as well as the art assets.

It was solely made for education purposes, where a player would listen to a series of sounds and place the corresponding frogs to the lilypads in the order they just heard. There was also a free mode in which a player could press the frog to play various notes.

About

The first game I made during the module was a game called Safeguard, which is a mix between pinball and air hockey. The mechanics were simple but proved to be very engaging amongst my classmates as they actively kept trying to outlast each other.

The main goal of the game was keeping the bombs out of the "danger areas" by closing the doors to these places, with the rule that only one door could be closed at a time. As time goes on within the game, additional bombs are added and the speed increases.

About

During this project, we were given two weeks to come up with a game and create a pitch presentation and prototype. We were given the theme of "Plants and Flowers" and were asked to examine "how we can experience flowers and plants in video games and what new understandings/knowledge/emotions/activities can be generated out of these experiences?".

The result was Eco-Save which is a tower defence game that features a witch who helps plants protect the forest from bulldozers. It features a season system that affects the type of plants.
